Are you putting the code into the html side, rather than the richtext?

You probably already know this one, but you can also type out what you want it to say, highlight it and click the url button on the richtext side, and it should let you enter the link.

Also, sometimes LJ is just kind of funky and adds weird html that you don't want and you have to actually delete it before something really simple will work :)

I wasn't, and I didn't know that. I'm still getting used to LiveJournal since I don't use it that much.
