There’s plenty that McGee wants to ask Tony: Are you okay? Do you need to eat? Are you sure?

But he doesn’t. He’s never been in the habit of giving Tony pity; now isn’t the time to start.

When they get back, Gibbs tells them to go home; the reports can be written and turned in the next day. It will definitely be a day for paperwork, what with all the ass-covering they’ll have to do so that the baby’s parents aren’t arrested.

As they begin to disperse, Gibbs says, “McGee, go with Tony.”

“What?” they say in unison.

Gibbs doesn’t look up from his computer. “McGee is going home with you, Tony.”

“Boss, I got wet, not shot!”

“Do you think this is a debate, DiNozzo?” Gibbs does look up then, and directs his blue gaze to Tim. “Any problems, McGee?”

“Uh. No, boss, I’m good.”

McGee turns Gibbs’ order over in his mind as he follows Tony to the elevator. He can’t imagine what Gibbs wants him to do; whatever it was that Tony burned in the fireplace is his business, and Tim knows better than to expect to be told the truth.

In the end, he opts to stay silent. He will speak when Tony gives him the invitation. And Tony doesn’t seem in the mood to talk.

They begin their silence as they walk to McGee’s car. Tim knows that Tony is hoping to be dropped off and left alone. But there is worry deep in Tim’s bones, lying heavy in his chest, cold behind his eyes; and not just because of Gibbs. He doesn’t want to leave Tony alone.

The silence continues all the way to Tony’s apartment. McGee keeps feeling the urge to look over at Tony’s shivering frame, wrapped in a coat, trying to warm up. McGee keeps denying himself that urge. If he looked at Tony, then he would be tempted to pull over, take that step, and probably lose Tony forever.

He doesn’t feel like he can risk that quite yet.

He pulls up in front of Tony’s apartment, and doesn’t reply when Tony asks him a question. McGee is weighing the possibilities of disobeying Gibbs, and of spending the night with Tony.

He makes his decision and follows Tony out of the car. DiNozzo doesn’t look surprised, but he doesn’t look resigned either.

McGee follows him into the building, up the stairs. He would have mentioned the elevator, but he doesn’t feel like putting himself out for Tony’s snide remarks -- and they seem to have gone back to their mutual silence.

There is still a sensation deep inside Tim’s chest, but it’s different from before. The worry is still there, but there’s also something....

When they reach Tony’s door, and as Tony unlocks it, the meaning of the change hits Tim fully, and he lets out a small noise; somewhere between a gasp and a moan. As the door swings open, Tony grips his tie, and pulls him inside.
