Tony lay in the quarantine room struggling for breath, turning his head as best as he could to see his Probie sitting next to him. He swallowed hard with both despair and gladness. Despair that the kid was at his side and likely just a few hours behind him in the journey toward death's door and glad to have his friend right there with him, encouraging him for the kid was okay. All right, more than okay. He was smart and decent and kind and definitely did not deserve to be cooped up in a room with a jaded playboy like himself and plague germs. However the longer the kid avoided coughing, the better his chances of surviving until the doctor found a cure and that's all Tony wanted. A cure in time to save McGeek. For that was the only thing that might ease the overwhelming guilt he was feeling. Guilt that he had opened that envelope while right next to McGee and then blew the contents into the air.

If only he had handed the suspicious envelope over to be destroyed. If only he hadn't blown the contents all over the bull pen. If only he had the courage to tell the kid just how much he admired the way he kept doggedly pursuing his goals in the face of everything. If only he hadn't razzed his Probie so much. If only he had more time to get to know the man. But it was too late. Tony was dying from the plague. Struggling for each breath while locked in a quarantine room with a man who deserved to live to the ripe old age of one hundred and two but might only survive him by hours. Tony swallowed tears of guilt and frustration, struggling to hold on. Desperate to hold on. Needing to hold on until a cure was found for McGee, the man who even now sat beside him, encouraging him to fight for life. A life that would only be worth living if Probie was beside him, always.
